The Hero of Ages (Mistborn #3) by Brandon Sanderson *Review*

We have made it!!! The last book in this epic series and was it a journey or what?!  Not to mention just the journey in length, 2,176 pages later, nice.  Now I say “we” because I like to think by the third book in a series you haven’t looked up reviews before reading it and only see them after you have finished.  But if you haven’t finished the series yet, what are you waiting for? This series is so so good! I gave this last book 4/5 stars and I will hold this series close to my heart for a while I am sure.

Goodreads Synopsis

Tricked into releasing the evil spirit Ruin while attempting to close the Well of Ascension, new emperor Elend Venture and his wife, the assassin Vin, are now hard-pressed to save the world.

My Experience

The story was well written and easy to follow.  I think I said this in my review of the first book, but I was hesitant to start my first epic fantasy series.  I’ve always been slightly intimidated both by size and content.  This however was the perfect intro into epic fantasy.  There wasn’t vast amount of names or characters.  There were certainly a lot but easy enough to keep track of.  The magic and abilities were explained well and we learned as the characters learned which made it easy to follow along.  And the world was interesting and well developed and not so huge that I didn’t know where I was at any given time.

The side characters make this series for me.  I didn’t really connect with the main characters all that much and it may be the reason I didn’t rate this series 5 stars.   The side characters however were so amazing and I was so invested in their well beings and what would happen to them.  Sazed is one of the best mentors ever written and Spook was such a fun character that grew a lot over the course of the series.  Not to mention Breeze, Ham, TenSoon, the list goes on, I love these characters so much.

I don’t think I would change anything about the ending, but since I wasn’t attached to the main characters I didn’t have any strong feelings towards the ending, I wasn’t left destroyed.  I am excited though to see how Sanderson continues this series with the sequels he is writing taking places hundreds of years later.  I am looking forward to being back in this world!  I would definitely recommend these books to anyone and everyone.  Afraid to read an epic fantasy?  Seriously, just give these a go.  So worth it!
